One of the best area hiking excursions is to the lush, green, and picturesque Estanzuela Falls, a 20m (66-ft.) cascade with a pool that's perfect for swimming and cooling off in. You must take the road to the hamlet of Estanzuela just south of the city (turn right after the hospital) to get to the path. It is only an hour-long walk, but bring food and water, as there are no stores after the highway junction. Reserva Tisey nature reserve is worth visiting just to climb its hill and enjoy its spectacular view. On a clear day, the Pacific lowlands and a line of volcanic peaks as far away as Lago Managua sweep before you. The reserve itself is made up of organic farms and jungle treks. You can go horseback riding or stay at the Eco Posada Tisey (tel. 505/2713-6213), an organic farm that offers simple rooms for $20 and dorm beds for $10. It is 8km (5 miles) southwest of the city, a little beyond Salto Estanzuela on the same road.
