A long-time Alaskan family operates the Golden North Motel  and they get much of their business from other Alaskans, including quite a few Native families making their annual trips into the big city in the summer. These locals know that this two-story
motel is the best bargain in Fairbanks proper. A two-story converted apartment building, its  60 comfortable if somewhat worn rooms are well-maintained though small: larger rooms are actually two of these small rooms put together and boast a pair of queen beds with a separate (if windowless) TV room. Niceties such as DVD/VCR players in the rooms; free coffe and pastries in the lobby; and a complimentary business center for guest use, add to the appeal, as does the friendly hospitality. Be sure to bring earplugs if you stay here, as you’ll be right in the airport flight path and, the freeway off-ramp and snowmobile lot are across the street.
