An exploration of the Dalarna region begins in Falun, the old capital of Dalarna. This town, which lies on both sides of the Falu River, is noted for its copper mines; the income generated from copper has supported many Swedish kings.

At this point you may be saying, "Enough with the mines already." But don't dismiss the attractions of Falun. After all, UNESCO inspectors thought it worthy enough to be preserved and added to their World Heritage List for future generations to explore. Even if you don't like mines, you might want to come here to pay homage to one of Sweden's most celebrated painters, Carl Larsson, whose home you can visit.
