Approximately 30km (19 miles) outside of town, a small nongjiale (farmhouse restaurant) is also home to around 300 long-tailed macaques. These primates are much friendlier than their unpredictable and aggressive counterparts in locations such as Ermeishan. They are quite happy to be hand fed by visitors, although they tend to snatch and growl rather than fawn and allow themselves to be petted. Watching them scramble over the rocks is very interesting and an afternoon stroll around the mountain is a pleasant distraction, but be warned this is no animal sanctuary, and deep greens might not find it so easy to share in this innocent pleasure as do local tourists. An equally interesting sight is one of the resident helpers who calls herself "Monkey Momma," and who has started to resemble her simian charges.
