There's a fantasy of Florida, given life in many a Jimmy Buffet song, that you can live out at the iconic Southport. It's the type of friendly dive that hasn't changed an iota since the 1970's, as you'll see if you peer in through the round "portholes" in the front door at the bustling, wood-paneled interior. Sure you can soak up the vibe in there, and watch a game on one of the many wall mounted TV's, but the back dining deck, with its views of the intracoastal waterway, is where the action is. There's live music nightly back there, and large tables, because diners tend to come here in big groups to celebrate big and small occasions, often with pitchers of beer or margaritas. As for the food: it's solidly tasty, and fresh (Southport is known for its grilled oysters—they're delish—and fish dips). I can think of few more fun places to watch the sun set into the water. A total scene--in a good way.
