You'll find more cafes and hole-in-the-wall bars around Fribourg's railway station than anywhere else in town, especially along either side of boulevard de Pérolles, rue de Romont, and rue de l'Hôpital. A particularly cozy bar is La Cave de la Rose, in the cellar of the Hôtel de la Rose, 1, rue de Morat (tel. 026/351-01-01). Rather mellow is the disco in the cellar of the Restaurant l'Escale, 3, Rte. de Belfaux, in the suburb of Givisiez (tel. 026/466-27-67; www.escale-hotel.ch), about 1km (half a mile) west of Fribourg's commercial core.

One hot spot is Planet Edelweiss, Mariahilf, Düdingen (tel. 026/492-05-05; www.planet-edelweiss.ch), an 18th-century inn converted into a bustling restaurant and dance club. It draws a young crowd to its location a 5-minute ride northeast of the center. The club is open until 2am Sunday to Thursday, 4am Friday and Saturday.
