Although not as varied as those in Luray Caverns, the highlights here are rock formations called anthodites -- delicate white spikes that spread in all directions from their positions on the cave ceiling. Their growth rate is about 1 inch every 7,000 years. A sophisticated lighting system enhances formations like the Capitol Dome, Rainbow Trail, and Painted Desert. A miniature train covering about a half-mile is a popular attraction for kids. The cave temperature is a cool 54°F (12°C) year-round, and the tours take an hour, so bring a sweater, even in summer. Back on the surface, the kids can ride a miniature train and wander through the Enchanted Dragon Mirror Maze.
