Shawnee Peak is a good family destination, a solid intermediate-level ski area carved (and I do mean carved) out of the side of Pleasant Mountain near Fryeburg. It's a good low-cost, low-key alternative (they don't even have a toll-free number) to larger, more crowded resorts in the White Mountains or western Maine. I really appreciate the creative packages this resort has developed: There has traditionally been a men's night and a ladies' night (tickets included lunch), and there's now a "Saturday night special" -- not a weapon, but a Saturday night/all-day Sunday combination deal. Night? That's right: Shawnee has some of northern New England's best night skiing, with fully half its trails lit until at least 9pm daily. Night tickets (good 4pm to closing) are a true steal (just $13 for adults) on weekdays. The lodge scene is sedate and family-oriented. For snowboarders, the hill maintains one of the largest park-and-pipe combinations in Maine -- which is also lit nightly.
