Castillo Sohail

Fuengirola may have been built up as a discount beach resort town, but it retains one remnant of its Moorish past: this hilltop 12th-century castle, built by the Almohad dynasty, overlooking the beach where both Romans and Carthaginians had earlier settled. The castle was modified many times after it fell into Christian hands (the armies of Isabel and Fernando) in 1485. Restored by Fuengirola trade school students, it is surrounded by beautiful green lawns. To find it, walk east along Paseo Marítimo toward the elegant cable-stay bridge over the Río Fuengirola.
