In the center of Wilderness, The Girls (tel. 044/877-1648; dinner Tues-Sun), referring to owners Roxanne and Cheri, serve up a great menu, including vast numbers of fresh prawns and good seafood (order the Cajun calamari steak). The location is less than spectacular -- right next to a filling station in the shadow of the N2 -- but this doesn't deter regulars, because the delicious food is such a great value. For more average fare, the pizzas at Pomodoro (tel. 044/877-1403; daily breakfast, lunch, and dinner) aren't bad, as the full tables and constant buzz attest. It's certainly better than any of the other casual places to eat in the village.

For a finer dining experience, try Cinnamon or the Serendipity. For die-hard carnivores, there's Joplin's, a shack-bar (part of Pirate's Creek; look for the turnoff from the N2, just after the Wilderness turnoff; tel. 072/292-4247). Joplin's serves up only one dish: steak (rump, T-bone, or sirloin) topped with a fried egg (a Portuguese tradition) and served with a side order of chips.
