Built between 1740 and 1755 with brick from English ships’ ballast (the steeple was added in 1824). The church was occupied by British troops during the Revolutionary War and by Union troops during the Civil War. The latter occupation resulted in a great deal of damage. The English stained glass behind the rebuilt altar was once part of a slaves’ chapel on the nearby Hagley Plantation. In the churchyard is one of the state’s oldest cemeteries, with the earliest marker dating back to 1767.
