River Room

Expect generous portions of fresh seafood at this popular joint; with its blend of local and international dishes, the River Room offers the best of casual Southern coastal dining. The signature shrimp and grits with smoked sausage is always good, but the shrimp and scallop pasta is also stuffed with seafood. The Carolina grouper is the best of the fresh fish, served blackened with basil cream sauce. The structure itself was completed in 1888 as the J.B. Steele Building, a commercial property for dry goods and groceries; the restaurant opened here 100 years later. The historic ambience is maintained with the original walls, hardwood floors, and a selection of nautical and early 20th-century antiques, while the dining room actually extends 50 feet over the Sampit River, affording spectacular views of the harbor. Don’t miss the restaurants’ giant reef aquarium, crammed with marine life.
