Alcantara Gorges

To see some beautiful rapids and waterfalls, head outside of town to the Gole dell'Alcantara (tel. 0942-985010), which is a series of gorges. The waters are extremely cold -- uncharacteristic for Sicily, but quite refreshing in August. It's usually possible to walk up the river from May to September (when the water level is low), though you must inquire about current conditions before you do so. From the parking lot, take an elevator partway into the scenic abyss and then continue on foot. You're likely to get wet, so bring your bathing suit. If you don't have appropriate shoes, you can rent rubber boots at the entrance. Allow at least an hour for this trip. From October to April, only the entrance is accessible, but the view is always panoramic. It costs 4€ to enter the gorge, which is open daily 7am to 7:30pm. By car, head up the SS185 some 17km (11 miles) from Taormina; the gorges are signposted. Or take Interbus (tel. 0942-625301) for the 1-hour trip departing from Taormina at 9:15 and 11:45am and 1:15, and 4:45pm. Buses from Gole dell'Alcantara return to Taormina at 9:25am, 12:35, 2:35, and 3:45pm. The round-trip fare is 5€. You can also take a taxi from Taormina, but you'll have to negotiate the fare with your driver.
