Another railway hotel (this one in 1915 by the Great Northern Railway), this palatial hostelry is a Montana icon. It is also my favorite place to hang my hat while “roughing it” in Glacier by day. What makes it so good? The secluded location on Swiftcurrent Lake, for one, and the remarkable sunset views from the veranda. It's also the most steeped in Glacier lore, reflected by the performances by David Walburn, who captures the park in song on Tuesday through Saturday evenings. The best rooms have a view of the lake from a private balcony, but all of the units have a woodsy, homey appeal. There are also family rooms with more space. Guests can also board a historic wooden boat for a tour that offers an up-close look at nearby glaciers.
