Cape Ann Museum

This meticulously curated museum makes an excellent introduction to Cape Ann’s history and artists. It devotes an entire gallery to the extraordinary work of Fitz Henry Lane, the Luminist painter whose light-flooded canvases show off his native Gloucester. The nation’s single largest collection of his paintings and drawings is here. Other galleries feature works by 20th-century and contemporary artists, and granite-quarrying tools and equipment. There’s also an outdoor sculpture court. The maritime and fisheries galleries display entire vessels, exhibits on the fishing industry, ship models, historic photographs, and a first order Fresnel lens. Check ahead for information about touring the historic houses: The adjacent Capt. Elias Davis House (1804), decorated and furnished in Federal style, and the newly restored 1710 White-Ellery House, a rare example of First Period architecture about a mile away at 244 Washington St.
