Planning a trip to Gniezno
Gniezno Tourist Information Center (Rynek 14; tel. 61/428-41-00; www.szlakpiastowski.com.pl) is open from April to September weekdays from 8am to 6pm, Saturdays from 9am to 3pm, and Sundays from 10am to 2pm. Off-season, it's open on weekdays only from 8am to 4pm. It is an excellent place for maps, English-language resources, and hotel and restaurant listings. They can advise on the Piast Route beyond Gniezno. To book English-speaking tour guides, call 2 days in advance. It's 140 z for 2 hours; that covers the cathedral and the two museums. Another tourist information point is the PTTK office (Laskiego 10; tel. 61/426-36-60).
Getting There
Gniezno is 286km (178 miles) to the east of Warsaw and 50km (31 miles) to the northeast of Poznan.
By Car -- From Poznan, take Road 5. If you're coming from Warsaw, take E30, exit at Wrzesnia, then turn north on Road 15. Figure on 4 hours' driving time from Warsaw and 1 hour from Poznan.
By Train -- Trains run regularly from Poznan to Gniezno's train station (Dworcowa 15; tel. 197-57). Tickets cost about 20 z, and the journey time is 45 minutes. The Town Square is a 10-minute walk in the northwest direction.
By Bus -- Frequent bus service is available from Poznan's PKS bus station to Gniezno's bus station (Dworcowa 15; tel. 61/428-26-53).
