Downsides first: the hotel is located in the old United Fruit Company compound near the popular duty-free zone, and not on the water. Still, rooms are comfortable and attractive, with heavy wooden beds, wicker chairs, and paintings of rural Costa Rican scenes. Best rooms and suites are on the main floor, as those on the lower level have much less natural light. The main restaurant and bar area feature beautiful stained-glass works. A lovely, large, free-form pool is in a recreation area across the street from the main hotel.
