What draws visitors to Golling, 12km (7 1/2 miles) south of Hallein via the A10, is the Gollinger Wasserfall (Golling Waterfall). It's 2km (1 1/2 miles) west of the little resort along an unnumbered local road (look for signs saying GOLLINGER WASSERFALL), followed by a 20-minute walk from the parking lot to the falls. The waterfall -- between Golling and Kuchl, 27km (17 miles) south of Salzburg -- tumbles down more than 153m (502 ft.) over a rock wall.

You can also visit the Salzach Gorge near Golling. It's an hour's walk from Golling up to Pass Lueg. It lies 3km (2 miles) south of Golling and is accessible by following Highway B159. The entrance is not strictly regulated. You might arrive before the park attendants do (as local climbers are known to). Admission is 3€ ($3.90) per person. In winter, snow and ice block access, and the gorge is unsafe except for experienced rock and ice climbers. Visits both to the falls and the gorge are possible from May to October daily from 9am to 6pm; or if you're a bit adventurous, you can visit year-round at your own risk. It's best to go while attendants are on hand.

Heimatmuseum Burg Golling, Markt 1 (tel. 06244/4356-0) has a chapel and an interesting folklore collection. You'll see remains of cave bears, fossils, and copies of rock drawings, plus old pictures of the village. There's also a hunting room, exhibits of regional costumes, and a chamber of torture. It's open from June to mid-September Tuesday through Sunday from 10am to noon. Admission is 4€ ($6.40) for adults, 1.50€ ($2.40) for children.
