Sint-Janskerk (Church of St. John)
The church is a step away from Markt and easily identified by its ornate spire peeking above the rooftops. As well as being the longest church in The Netherlands at 23m (76 ft.), this 15th-century Gothic beauty hides some of Europe’s loveliest stained-glass windows, considered so beautiful that they were even spared destruction in the Protestant Alteration of 1578. They were donated to the church by a series of rich patrons and number 64 in total, with a total of 2,412 panels depicting biblical scenes and contemporary scenes. To see the contrast between the stained glass of times past and contemporary work, take a peek at the most recent window, no. 28A, commemorating the World War II years in Holland.
