From the moment you turn off the north-south coastal highway from Hurghada, you are in the world of Gouna, which is enmeshed in a confusing web of streets that curve and weave around the various little islands the town is built on. Every intersection has reasonably clear signposts pointing to the main hotels and the marina, however, and if they aren't enough, there always seems to be a cheerful security guard on hand to point the way. There are two main shopping and eating areas -- Downtown, also known as Kafr Gouna, and the Marina. Downtown is larger, and resembles a proper town, with a grocery store and a good selection of restaurants and bars. The Marina, on the other hand, has a number of hotels and restaurants clustered around the boat docks.
By Plane -- Gouna is less than 20km (12 miles) from Hurghada International Airport, which is served by half a dozen domestic flights a day from Cairo, and at least as many international flights. Fare for the 1-hour flight from Cairo is about LE880 ($160/£82). A transfer arranged through your hotel is the easiest way to complete the trip, but if you haven't arranged this, there are plenty of taxis at the airport. Bargain vigorously over the fare, but don't expect to get it below LE150 ($27/£14).
By Bus -- Gouna is easily reached from Cairo by bus. There are 12 buses every day from Turgoman Station to Gouna, which run from 7am to 2:15am for a fare of LE55 ($10/£5.10).
Tok-toks (motor rickshaw taxis) abound. You can flag them down in the street, or you can have them pick you up at the hotel. Whichever you do, the fare is going to be LE5 (90¢/45p), so save those 5-pound notes whenever you get them.
The nice thing about Gouna is that there's no hassle about information. All hotels and many businesses have a well-designed map with a basic phone directory and a list of services that they hand out for free.
