254km (158 miles) N/NW of Port Elizabeth

Graaff-Reinet, South Africa's fourth-oldest town, is 837km (519 miles) south of Johannesburg -- a good stopover if you're driving down to the Garden Route. Try to stay at least 2 days. Spend a morning admiring some of the 220 national monuments, and then take one of the worthwhile side trips into the Karoo. This is one of the few towns surrounded by a nature reserve, and you'll find one of the world's best examples of outsider art in the nearby hamlet of Nieu Bethesda.
