The helpful Graaff-Reinet Publicity Association (tel. 049/892-4248; www.graaffreinet.co.za; Mon-Fri 8am-5pm, Sat 9am-noon) is housed in 13A Church St.
By Car -- From Johannesburg, travel south on the N1, then take the N9 south at Colesberg to Graaff-Reinet. From Port Elizabeth, take the R75 north, a 3-hour drive. (If by chance you find yourself traveling on the N10 from Cookhouse to Craddock -- a much longer trip -- make sure to stop at the Daggaboer farm stall, a haven of hospitality, homemade ginger beer, pickles, and venison pie.)
By Bus -- Translux and Intercape buses pull in daily from Cape Town, the Garden Route, and Port Elizabeth.
The easiest and best way to explore the town is on foot or by bicycle. For guided tours of the town and surrounds and bicycle rentals, contact Karoo Connections Tours (tel. 049/892-3978; www.karooconnections.co.za). They provide town and township tours; trips to the Valley of Desolation, Bushman Rock Art, and the Owl House; and game-viewing drives in the Camdeboo National Park. They also can help with information about horseback-riding and hiking tours.
