Cave Rafting 

Wild West Adventures (tel. 0508/286-877 in NZ, or 03/768-6649; www.fun-nz.com) has a 5-hour Dragon's Cave Rafting Trip for NZ$165 (NZ$245 with rappelling), taking you deep into a subterranean wonderland of lakes, glowworms, and waterfalls. They also offer kayaking and guided walk packages, bird-watching and photographic tours, and jade and gold-hunting adventures.

Golf

Greymouth Golf Club, Golf Links Road, Kaiata (tel. 03/768-5332), is 3km (1 3/4 miles) from town, has 18 holes. Greens fees are from NZ$30.

Off-Road Adventures 

Five kilometers (3 miles) north of Greymouth, you can experience an off-road adventure with On Yer Bike (tel. 0800/669-372 in NZ, or 03/762-7438; www.onyerbike.co.nz) on either a four-wheeled bike or the amphibious eight-wheeled Argo. A 1-hour Enchanted Forest quad-bike ride costs NZ$115 for adults, NZ$90 children 12 to 15. One hour on a two-seater go-cart will set you back NZ$125 for the driver; a second adult passenger pays NZ$125, a passenger aged 3 to 15 pays NZ$70.

Surfing

The main breaks are on Cobden and Blaketown beaches, both signposted about 5 minutes north of central Greymouth, and farther north at 9-Mile Beach.

Walking

The Point Elizabeth Walkway starts at Rapahoe and follows the coast south around the headland to the Cobden Beach road end. The track takes under 2 hours one-way. If the tide is low, return along the beach. Go in early evening to enjoy one of Greymouth's fabulous sunsets.

Walks range from 30-minute wanders to multiday options; some are guided. White-water Rafting

Wild West Adventures has a wide range of rafting packages that can include trail rides, helicopters, walking, or drinking champagne in natural hot pools surrounded by rainforest. There are three popular Hot Rock options. The 5-hour guided walk, raft, and hot pools trip costs NZ$280 per person. If you include a helicopter ride, the price rises to NZ$545.
