By Train -- The Tranz Scenic TranzAlpine route (tel. 0800/872-467 in NZ; www.tranzscenic.co.nz) runs daily between Christchurch and the Greymouth railway station on Mackay Street and will stop in Moana (at Lake Brunner) on request. This is New Zealand's best rail experience.

By Coach (Bus) -- InterCity (tel. 09/623-1503, or 03/768-7080) buses reach Greymouth from Queenstown, Fox Glacier, Franz Josef, Nelson, and Westport. Both Kiwi Experience (tel. 09/366-9830) and Magic Travellers (tel. 09/358-5600) include Greymouth on their routes. West Coast Shuttle (tel. 03/768-0028; www.westcoastshuttle.co.nz) travels Greymouth to Christchurch and returns daily, with stops at Arthur's Pass and other small towns along the way.

By Car -- Greymouth is reached via Highway 6 from both the north and the south. Highway 7 brings travelers from the east coast via Lewis Pass, and Highway 73 takes you through Arthur's Pass National Park on the road from Christchurch. The trip from Nelson takes approximately 4 to 5 hours; from Christchurch, 4 hours.
