Hospedería del Real Monasterio
Although run these days as an independent hotel, the Hospedería retains much of its monastic atmosphere. The Gothic stone structure, dating from the 16th century, shares a cloister with the basilica where Our Lady of Guadalupe resides. When you close the heavy wooden door to your room the sound echoes around the red-tiled corridor, and you might see a pair of whispering monks passing through the cloister. Given the rarefied atmosphere, prices for the simply decorated guest rooms are remarkably down to earth, but you’ll need to reserve well in advance as pilgrim groups sometimes book the entire accommodation, especially around the main religious festivals. Before heading out to explore, ask at the porter’s lodge about reserving for dinner in the historic dining room, or in the Gothic cloister in summer.
