Stumbling across Poet’s Cove is always something of a happy surprise. Unlike the quaint little B&Bs that pepper the islands, this is a big, beautiful, new-build luxury resort in a scenic cove on peaceful South Pender Island. It’s designed in classic West Coast Craftsman style, with a lovely, high-ceilinged great room that features a massive stone fireplace and gorgeous views of the marina below. (The marina makes this a favorite destination of boaters.) There are a variety of room styles, ranging from basic lodge rooms to cottages with living rooms and kitchens and the luxe villas. All have fireplaces, overstuffed chairs and sofas where you’ll want to curl up with a good book, and balconies with views. There is also a gorgeous restaurant that unfortunately seems to garner mixed reviews despite its high-end ambitions, and the excellent, award-winning Susurrus spa. Note that in early 2014, the resort was bought by new owners; look for improvements to come.
