Halifax Central Library
Near the foot of Spring Garden Road, a block west of Barrington Street, the main library building stands as the city’s most innovative architectural works and was deservedly named one of the world’s 10 most beautiful libraries by Wired magazine. From the outside, it looks like a stack of boxes . . . or books. Inside, it’s an airy, open space full of light, with secret, quiet corners for reading or watching the city. Stairwells crisscross like those at Hogwarts, Harry Potter’s fictional school. Danish architects designed the funky building; it opened in late 2014 to wild enthusiasm from residents. Even if you aren’t looking for a book or need to check your e-mail, it’s worth taking a look inside to experience the building. There are two cafes and a rooftop terrace where you can enjoy fabulous views. Remarkably, artist Cliff Eyland painted over 5,000 library card–sized paintings that adorn one wall.
