For six generations, the Spengel family has welcomed everybody from Bismarck to Mark Twain in Heidelberg’s most revered student tavern. It seems that every student who has attended the university has left his or her mark (or initials) on the walls, and every visitor in town eventually finds his or her way here, too, joining such past guests as Marilyn Monroe, John Wayne, and John Foster Dulles. Guests dine well if not elegantly on Kartoffelsupp (potato soup), Käsespätzle mit zeilben (cheese spaetzel with onions), rumpsteak, and other solid basics, which taste all the better when accompanied by a huge selection of beer. A pianist plays everything from show tunes to German drinking songs in the background.
