Suomen Kansallismuseo (National Museum of Finland)
This museum is broken into five sections, which include The Treasure Trove, presenting the museum's collections of coins, medals, decorations, silver, jewelry, and weapons; The Prehistory of Finland, the country's largest archaeological exhibit; The Realm, telling the history of Finnish culture and society from the 13th to the 19th centuries; A Land and Its People, presenting rural life in Finland before industrialization; and The Past Century, showing independent Finland and its culture in the 20th century.
Highlight of the Treasure Trove is the Silver and Jewelry Room, with some stunning goldsmith work and a display of fashionable jewelry dating back to the Renaissance era. An amazing piece is an elkhead soapstone sculpture from the Stone Age found in Prehistory of Finland. In The Realm you discover such treasures as the oldest preserved ecclesiastical wood sculpture in Finland, and the Drawing Room of Jakkarila Manor, with wall coverings, art, ceiling paintings, and a flamboyant rococo style dating from the 1760s. From St. Petersburg the throne of the Russian emperor was brought to Finland in 1809.
