Xu is the brainchild of Bien Nguyen, who has created one of the city's most elegant and innovative restaurants and one of the hippest night spots all under one roof. The plush red velvet chairs, beige tablecloths, and discreet lighting give the place an aura of sophistication. Dishes in the upstairs restaurant are intended for sharing between friends or family, as with a typical Vietnamese meal, and they include both classic and modern items. I tried the soft-shell crab with mayonnaise and cauliflower, which was a superb combination of tastes and textures, but there are plenty of appealing alternatives like lemongrass skewered seabass or coconut braised pork belly. In the evenings the downstairs lounge serves cocktails that are as innovative as the food upstairs.
