Australia’s largest privately owned art gallery opened in 2011 promising to “shock and offend.” Owner David Walsh wanted his art museum to be daring and provocative—and so it is. But more often, it delights and amazes. This museum of old and new art challenges, informs, and entertains, with a collection that ranges from antiquities from Egypt, Greece, Italy, Africa, and Mesoamerica to contemporary art, including Australian modernism and contemporary Australian, British, European, and American art. For the sensitive (or those bringing children with them), there’s a map that shows how to avoid works that are sexually explicit or “potentially confronting.” The museum is the latest addition to Walsh’s Moorilla Estate, which is also home to a winery, a microbrewery, a restaurant (The Source) and stunning accommodations (the MONA Pavilions). It’s almost worth going to Tasmania just for this.
