Pakkhúsið, Krosseyjarvegur, by the harbor (tel. 478-1540; free admission; Jun-Aug daily 1-6pm), is more of an arts-and-crafts store than a museum, but an unexceptional -- and free -- nautical exhibit is hosted downstairs.

For a view of Vatnajökull Glacier, take a short stroll along the water on the northwest side of town, behind Hótel Höfn. For an easy 2-hour walk, head to the Ring Road, drive 16km (10 miles) east, turn right shortly after exiting the tunnel, and proceed 2km (1 1/2 miles) beyond the farm buildings until the road ends. The walk south along the coast is uneventful for the first 30 minutes but eventually reaches a secluded and romantic expanse of sand, surf, and grassy tufts backed by steep mountains. Around the peak of Brunnhorn is another gorgeous beach.
