Hohhot's varied and satisfying Mongolian cuisine offers a big change from the mainstream Chinese diet and is definitely worth sampling at least once. In addition to the Mongolian restaurants listed below, there are also plenty of good street eats to be enjoyed; tables are set up along Xilinguole Bei Lu near the junction with Zhongshan Lu on a summer's evening and sell beer and tasty kabobs. If you're really in need of a Western splurge then the daily buffets at the Shangri-La's Xin Cafe (2nd floor; ¥148), or the Nei Menggu Fandian's Warm (¥128), should comfortably sate your needs, or for Italian try Buon Appetito in the Holiday Inn. Cheaper Western options include the usual array of McDonald's and KFCs, along Zhongshan Xi Lu, where you'll also find a Pizza Hut.
