This is one of the original eco-lodges, and still among the best. It has three special qualities no one else does as well. One, although the accommodations are luxurious, they don't look it; the place fits perfectly into its setting, like the collection of historic seaside cabins it is. Second, the setting, on rich China Poot Bay, where the wealth and accessibility of the marine and coastal environment are unmatched. Third, the charisma and practices of the hosts and guides, who are not only real Alaskans, but also leading experts on the nature and history of the region, and leaders for its protection. The food is famous and guiding is included. That works simply enough: each morning, each party's own guide asks what they want to do, and that's how they spend the day.
