La Colombe d’Or

For luxury lodgings with a sense of grandeur and old-world elegance, splurge on a stay at this five-suite, nine-villa property anchored by a 1923-built mansion, originally the private residence of oil tycoon W.W. Fondren. Each suite is named after a celebrated French Impressionist and is filled with art and antiques; some boast large formal dining rooms. Surrounding a leafy courtyard are apartment-style units with one or two bedrooms, kitchens, and separate living spaces. A 2,000-square-foot art gallery occupies the third floor of the main building and features original oils by contemporary European artists and rare lithographs from the Picasso estate. In addition to fine art, La Colombe d'Or is known for fine dining. You're probably not going to find a more ambitious hotel eatery in the city than Restaurant Cinq, which showcases highly creative New American cuisine. For something a little more intimate, duck into the cozy, classy bar for a choice cocktail or glass of wine. Over the years, the exclusive boutique hotel has attracted its share of the rich and famous, including Bishop Desmond Tutu, Madonna, and President Bill Clinton.
