Houston isn't exactly a hotbed of authentic New York-style Jewish delicatessens, which is why this bustling strip-mall spot is so beloved by locals. Owner Ziggy Gruber is a mensch, filling his massive menu with classics such as matzoh ball soup, smoked salmon overnighted from New York, cheese blintzes, stuffed cabbage, and, of course, humongous sandwiches, sliced to order. The corned beef, cured in-house for 30 days, is the star, but the hot pastrami on rye is no slouch. Housemade pickles are complimentary.
