Planning a trip to Huang Shan

Getting There

The nearest airports and railway stations are at Tunxi, 65km (40 miles) and a 1 1/2-hour bus ride away. The Tunxi Airport is more commonly called Huang Shan Airport. In Tangkou, the nearest town serving the mountain, buses leave for Tunxi from the long-distance bus station (tel. 0559/256-6666) just before the main gate to Huang Shan and from the main bridge area in town. Slow long-distance buses also run to Hefei (every 35 min., 7:30am-4:20pm; 6 hr.; ¥108), Shanghai (every hour 7:10am-6pm; 8 hr.; ¥132), and Hangzhou (every hour 6:50am-5:50pm; 6 hr.; ¥85).

Getting Around

Miandi (van) taxis charge ¥3 to ¥5 for trips in town. The start of the Eastern Mountain Trail (Eastern Steps) or the cable car at Yungu is another hour away by minibus (¥5) or taxi (approximately ¥30 per trip or ¥10 per person depending on the number of people). The Peach Blossom Hot Springs area and the start of the Western Mountain Trail (Western Steps) will require a 30-minute walk or a taxi ride from the Tangkou bus station (¥10-¥15). If you want to take the cable car up the western slopes, take a minibus for ¥5 to ¥10 or a taxi for around ¥40, subject to bargaining, from Tangkou to the Mercy Light Temple (Ciguang Ge).
