Iceland's most world-renowned trek -- a four-day route blessed with astonishing scenery -- is the 4-day trek known as Laugavegurinn, connecting the interior wonderland of Landmannalaugar to the alpine oasis of Tþórsmörk. Facilities along the route are hardly luxurious, but you can hire a tour company to carry your bags from mountain hut to mountain hut. The Laugavegurinn is passable from roughly the beginning of July to early September. Book the mountain huts well in advance.
Day 1: Reykjavík
See our 4-day itinerary for a full day of Reykjavík activities. You'll also need this day to stock up on groceries (and perhaps some last-minute supplies) since provisions are generally unavailable on the trail -- if you are going with a tour group, check with the operator to see if they provide food.
Days 2 & 3: Landmannalaugar
Board the morning bus from Reykjavík to Landmannalaugar, whose rhyolite landscape is a photographer's dream. This wondrous hiking zone within Fjallabak Nature Reserve is one of the best in the country. Plan to spend 2 nights at the mountain hut run by Ferðafélag Íslands to allow yourself a leisurely day-and-a-half for exploring the region. Bathing in the natural hot springs near the accommodation is a perfect nightcap.
Days 4 to 7: The Laugavegurinn
Four days is the ideal amount of time to hike through this fabulous procession of interior scenery. The entire route is 55km (34 miles), with mountain huts spaced at roughly 14km (9-mile) intervals. You may be hankering for privacy by the time you reach Tþórsmörk, so consider booking a private room at the Húsadalur mountain hut for your last night in the region.
Day 8: Back to Reykjavík
Enjoy another day hike in Þórsmörk before catching the 3pm bus back to Reykjavík for your final evening in the capital. Round out the evening with a hearty meal at Þrír Frakkar—welcome back to the real world indeed—and prepare for your next-day departure home.
