Vopnafjörður is the rare Icelandic settlement without a geothermally heated pool inside the village proper. Many residents, however, feel privileged to have this idyllic alternative next to the Selá, an elite salmon-fishing river patronized by Prince Charles and George H. W. Bush. The simple facility has two hot tubs and changing rooms. The turnoff from Route 85, about 9km (5 1/2 miles) north of Vopnafjörður, is marked by an icon of a head and shoulders bobbing above waves. The pool is 3km (2 miles) from the turnoff.
