It seems as if every third store in old Ioannina sells jewelry, silverware, hammered copper, and embossed brasswork -- the traditional crafts. Many of the jewelry stores sell modern work in gold and silver and/or precious and semiprecious jewels. Prices are probably lower than those in more cosmopolitan cities. However, be wary of "antiques" offered in some shops -- they may not be all that old, and if they really do date earlier than 1830, you need an export license!

There's a cluster of jewelry and gift shops opposite the walled citadel. Typical selections of metalwork (and also water pipes) may be found at Politis Douvflis, 12 Plateia Yioryio; or at Nikos Gogonis, 13 Karamanlis. At 56 and 65 Averoff, George Minos Moschos offers a somewhat more unusual selection of silver, jewelry, and older secondhand objects ("antiques"). Pospotikis Bothers, 12 Ethnikis Antistaseos, has a fine selection of bronze objects, some antiques jewelry, and reproductions of older metal objects. Here and there you may see embroidered clothing or woven socks, but this region is not especially known for its needlework.
