The 2,100-acre Crane Estate encompasses a National Landmark home, a gorgeous sandy beach, a wildlife refuge, and an exquisite Inn. The home, or “Great House” of Castle Hill on the Crane Estate, 290 Argilla Rd. (tel. 978/356-4351), is a Stuart-style mansion built by Richard Teller Crane, Jr., who made his fortune in plumbing and bathroom fixtures early in the 20th century. Guided indoor tours run April to December. Or you can just roam the grounds; take in the Grand Allée lawn that rolls a half mile down to the Atlantic. The estate is also home to Crane Beach, the Crane Wildlife Refuge, a network of hiking trails, and The Inn at Castle Hill.
