A long-time favorite on Playa Norte with an artsy style, Hotel Na Balam is starting to show its age a bit (hence two stars from us rather than three). Still, the setting is lovely, with a stellar white beach set against palms and flowering gardens. Some rooms face the beach, which sounds great but provides less privacy than those in gardens by the swimming pool. The hotel’s use of folk art has long been one of its best features. Hand-woven hammocks hang outside most rooms, which are decorated with embroidered textiles and carved statues of Maya royalty. Master suites include small pools with whirlpool. Yoga is emphasized here with daily classes, retreats, and workshops in an arrangement with a local yoga school. The restaurant, Zazil Ha, and beach bar remain popular. Na Balam is a popular spot for destination weddings and is nearly filled with large groups.
