Frommer's Staff

The sister winery of Carmel Mizrachi in Rishon LeZion, south of Tel Aviv, this is the largest winery in Israel; founded in 1906, it produces 60% of all the country's wine exports. There are organized tours, wine tastings, and a shop on the premises with a complete selection of Carmel Mizrachi products sold at about 15% below standard retail price. Among notable choices are the cabernet sauvignon 1985 from the Rothschild series and the merlots from the Estate series. Also look for a fruity red wine called hilulim, the first wine produced after the grape harvest. Check to see if there will be any of the winery's occasional evening parties, with all-you-can-eat buffets and live music, while you're in town.
