Punctuating the entrance to Istiklal Caddesi (which means "Independence St.") is this monument to the republic. The sculpture, created by the Italian sculptor Pietro Canonica, symbolizes the War of Independence on one side. The opposite side is a representation of the Republic of Turkey. The monument was erected here in 1928 inside an arched foundation designed by Istanbul-born architect Gulio Mongeri.
