To get a feel for colonial Jakarta, visit Old Batavia, the heart of which is the cobblestoned Taman Fatahillah square. Several buildings here have been restored, but even the more decrepit structures have an organic beauty, with tree roots and vines trying to stake their claim. From Taman Fatahillah, walk west to Kali Besar ("great river"), the canal that was once the Fifth Avenue of colonial Batavia. On the canal's west bank are impressive 18th-century homes. Follow the canal north to the city's last remaining Dutch drawbridge.
