This impressive gate is the only surviving section of the wall that once surrounded the city. Originally built to serve as the south gate in 1389, the present structure was built in 1768 and renovated in 1979. Not only is it a relic from the Joseon Dynasty, but it is also the site where the conflict between Catholicism and Confucianism was played out. The first Korean Catholic martyr was executed here in 1790 for his religious beliefs.
