Waldorf Astoria

One of the most magnificent buildings in Jerusalem, this hotel was originally built to be the city’s treasury building in 1928-29 under the order of Jerusalem’s Supreme Muslim Council (it was supervised by the infamous Mufti of Jerusalem). Its ornate façade and interior are a wonderful mélange of influences—Art Deco, Roman, Morrish, Arabic—all brought back to vibrant life in 2014, when the former owner finished a reported $150 million top-to-bottom renovation. Today, there’s a subtle Ottoman-inspired theme that that runs throughout the hotel, and lots of luxury, from the size of all the guest rooms (huge); to heated marble bathroom floors and mirrors with built in TVs in the bathrooms; to heavenly and massive beds. Balcony rooms above the fourth floor have superb Old City and downtown views. More luxury awaits in the spa, the hotel’s two gourmet restaurants and in the Kings Court where afternoon tea, creative cocktails, and sweet treats are served. There is also a tapas bar. Tip: ask the concierge about having your luggage checked in at the hotel and delivered to the airport. The Waldorf Astoria is situated on the corner of King David and Agron streets, only a few minutes from Jaffa Gate and the Old City.
