Exploring conditions are optimal from mid-June to mid-August; you (and, unfortunately, the mosquitoes) will find the area most accessible at this time. The best way to tackle the region is to first consult the tourist office . They will help with maps and advice about how to see the surrounding wilderness, and they will advise you about local conditions.

You can hike to the mighty Muddus Fall, in a deep ravine of the Muddus River. Trips are conducted from June 2 to August 24 daily 9am to 5pm; they last about 8 hours and cover a distance of some 13km (8 miles). The price, including food, guide, and transportation, is 750SEK ($150/£75) for adults, 325SEK ($65/£33) for ages 6 to 15. It's free for ages under 6. For more information, call tel. 0971/122-20.

At nearby Lake Talvatissjön you can catch Arctic char and rainbow trout (if you're lucky). Visit the tourist office for a fiskekort (fishing permit). At the lake is a cleaning table for the fish, and a fireplace or grill in case you'd like to cook your catch. We recently prepared our own grilled char luncheon, inviting some visiting Stockholmers to join us. They flattered us by telling us it was their best meal of the trip.
