A Frontier Outpost

If you're traveling from Luleå on Route 97 toward Jokkmokk, consider stopping at Boden. Founded in 1809, this is Sweden's oldest garrison town. After losing Finland to Russia, and fearful of a Russian invasion, Sweden built this fortress to protect its interior region. Visit the Garrionmuseet (Garrison Museum), which has exhibits on military history, as well as uniforms and weapons used throughout Sweden's history.
