Getting There -- Ore. 82 connects Joseph to La Grande in the west, and Ore. 3 heads north from nearby Enterprise to Lewiston, Idaho, by way of Wash. 129.

Festivals -- Check out the rowdy Chief Joseph Days Rodeo (tel. 541/432-1015; www.chiefjosephdays.com), over the last full weekend in July. In mid-July the Nez Perce hold their annual TamKaLiks Celebration (www.wallowanezperce.org) and powwow in the nearby town of Wallowa.
